Which heat pump system is the cheapest to operate? 

With regards to determining the cost of running a Heat Pump, a heat pump is traditionally at least 3 times more efficient than a Gas system. if we assume the average three bed house uses roughly 12,600kWh (you can find this information on a gas bill provided by your supplier), a heat pump will traditionally use less than a third of this, even as low as a quarter. However the cost of gas per unit and the cost of electricity per unit will be different depending on supplier and location you can then work out what a heat pump might cost to run your home. The higher the source temperature (Air or Ground) and the lower your heating flow temp, the higher the efficiency. If we take the above example of 12,600kWh of gas, at COP (coefficient of performance) 3.5 from an average heat pump, this will be 3,600 kWh of electricity to run the heat pump system.
