Can a heat pump be installed on a roof?
Yes, you can install the heat pump on a flat roof area, however please consider the following things when deciding where your heat pump is to be located. Usually under permitted development rules you wouldn’t need to apply for planning however if you live in a conservation area or area of outstanding natural beauty you will likely need to consult with your local planning office, it’s always important to check!! Another thing you’ll need to consider is access, just like conventional boilers, these will need servicing yearly to ensure that they are kept in good working condition but also so your warranty is not voided, make sure there is access for a technician to easily and safely get to the unit, otherwise those annual service bills will get pretty hefty. And finally consider that this is an external unit, we can always try to minimise exposure to the elements but it’s likely that degradation will happen quicker when more exposed.
Can heat pump be put in a cupboard?
Try and avoid enclosing your Air Source heat pump in as it will begin to suck the expelled cold air back into the unit, meaning it will have to work harder to extract any ambient warmth. Reduced airflow can lead to reduced efficiency and less heating but with a higher electricity cost.
Can heat pump be installed in a garage?
An Air Source Heat Pump will have equipment inside and outside the home, however the main unit will have to sit outside, this is not only to comply with the manufacturers specification for warranty purposes but also because of the way it is designed, these ASHP units are designed to extract heat from low temperature, as such it needs a plentiful supply of fresh air and when it expels, what remains is extremely cold air, which would be counter productive in an indoor environment. In our opinion and as directed in many installation manuals the best place to install an ASHP is usually to the side of the house or tucked away in a garden. Baystar can give you guidance on the best place to install your heat pump’s external equipment.
Can heat pump be wall mounted?
The simple answer is usually a yes, an ASHP can be floor standing, on a plinth or wall mounted using brackets. You’ll need to have enough air flow round the intake on the unit, and it must be level and secure. The things to consider will always be servicing and maintenance:
- Will placing my Heat Pump 6ft off the ground make it a harder to access and therefore more expensive to service and maintain?
- Will it be visible from the street? You may need to apply for planning if you plan to mount the unit high on an external wall, especially in any conservation areas or similar.
