This is a very subjective answer but in the long run the answer is usually yes, installing solar panels is a money saving exercise, in the long run.
There are a couple of things to consider here that will help you decide whether Solar Panels are for you – the first being what is your usage? This can be found on any electricity bill and can be a first great step in understanding your household usage. When looking to reduce your electricity bill you’ll want to replace as much of that usage as possible with solar power however it’s important to not size your system to cover this in winter as not only will the installation be likely huge and therefore have a massive cost it will over produce during the summer months which will be returned to the grid (which can generate income but will likely be negligible compared to the cost of installing a large system).
Having storage batteries installed, whilst means a higher installation cost, will mean you can utilise more of the energy produced as typically we use household items more in the evening when the solar panels are not generating power.
Whilst it is very tempting to oversize your system in an attempt to get the property “off grid” but this is not a suitable goal unless you intend to reduce your consumption dramatically.
Whenever we are looking to model a solar array we use a software that will show 20 year payback with an idea of self-consumption, export and import to/from the grid.
